‘The Nun 2’ will bring back Valak: this is the true story of the demon that inspired the film

The cinematic universe of “The Conjuring” has captivated millions of viewers with its blend of horror and mystery, which is now one of the most popular classics of the genre, as it is based on supposedly true stories.

Among the many cases investigated by renowned demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren, one in particular left a deep impression on the public: the case of Valak, also known as “The Nun”.

Valak: the story of the demon that inspired the movie “The Nun”

This terrifying demon, which has haunted Lorraine since the beginning of the franchise, is now back in a second installment of ‘The Nun’, scheduled for release on September 8, 2023. However, while the portrayal of demons in these films is fantastic and not based on specific names mentioned in religious or historical texts, there is an entity that could be the inspiration for Valak.

Although Valak is portrayed as a nun in the film directed by Corin Hardy, the reality differs from what is presented in various occult books such as “The Lesser Key of Solomon”, “Dictionnaire Infernal” and “Pseudomonarchia daemonum”.

According to these writings, his actual appearance is rather angelic and is represented as a winged child riding a two-headed dragon. The film explains that this representation tries to emphasize his ability to change his appearance and deceive his victims.

Valak, also known as Volac or Valu, is considered one of the most powerful demons, with 38 legions of lesser demons under his command. He is said to be the ruler of hell and has the ability to subdue snakes. In addition, he possesses the ability to desecrate and take control of church members, be they nuns, priests, or parishioners. It was precisely this last idea that inspired the director of “La Monja” to develop the story.

Although there are various interpretations of the existence of these demons, Father José Antonio Fortea, a Catholic priest and theologian specializing in demonology, argues that they are rather literary inventions found in books on witchcraft and sorcery rather than the Bible.

According to him, the only demon names that appear in the “Holy Scriptures” are Satan, the Devil, Beelzebub, Lilith, Asmodeus, Seirim, Daemon, Belial, Apollyon, and Lucifer.

“What is certain, and we know it from the Holy Bible and from exorcisms, is that every demon has a name. A name given by God that expresses the nature of his sin,” he said in an interview with “ACI Prensa.”

In conclusion, the case of Valak, the demon from ‘The Nun 2’, has caused a lot of intrigue and horror in the cinematic universe of ‘The Conjuring’.

Although his appearance differs from historical depictions, he is still an impressive character who has left a mark on the franchise and in the minds of viewers. Let us know if you have already heard about him in real life or you only know what we have been told in the movies.
