28 Days Later: News from the sequel to the cult horror film!

Wondering where the project for the third film in the 28 Days Later saga is? moving slowly…

The real sea serpent, the third part has been discussed for many years. In an interview with the site ReverseScreenwriter Alex Garland discussed the project again and made an announcement that could lead to…

Released in 2003 28 days later Danny Boyle quickly established itself as a classic of genre cinema. With a budget of $8 million, the feature film, which featured Cillian Murphy – who, despite his experience, was stressed a lot before landing the role of Oppenheimer for Christopher Nolan – made $84 million at the international box office.

In the film, an animal protection commando rescues dozens of chimpanzees subjected to horrific experiments. But as soon as they are freed, the primates, infected with a mysterious virus, jump on their “saviors” and kill them.

After 28 days, the evil spread like lightning, mass evacuation of the population was carried out. A few survivors go into hiding to escape the “tainted” thirst for violence. It is in this context that Jimmy, the courier, comes out of a deep coma.

Four years later, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo is staging a sequel, 28 Weeks, which takes place 6 months after the events of the first opus.

The US Army has landed in virus-ravaged England and is trying to restore civilization to London. Robert Carlyle takes over from Cillian Murphy, and the work also achieved a great score at the worldwide box office: $65 million for a $15 million budget.

28 days later

At the end of the feature film, we find out that the infected managed to escape and therefore the virus will spread everywhere. The final scene suggests that the third installment, titled 28 Months Later, will see the light of day.

But 16 years later, still nothing. And yet, Danny Boyle, Alex Garland and Cillian Murphy are set to return for the third installment.

28 months or 28 years?

However, in October 2022, Cillian Murphy explained to the site NME that he wanted to reprise his role, but there was a question of credibility as the third film was supposed to take place 28 months after the events of the first film. But 20 years have passed…

I think there’s a problem with that because I’m 20 years older. But when I meet Danny Boyle or Alex Garland, I always mention this project.”

Today, screenwriter-turned-director Alex Garland (we owe him Ex machina and Annihilation in particular) seems to have found a solution.

28 days later

He explains: “A few years ago, I had an idea: to actually make this film 28 Years Later”. Therefore, the title of the third opus will no longer be 28 Months Later, but 28 Years Later, and will take place 28 years after the first film. Thus, Cillian Murphy’s age will no longer be an issue.

During an interview with the American site, Alex Garland also specified that if Danny Boyle is not available to direct the film, he would be ready to do so. “If Danny doesn’t want to direct it himself, I’d be willing to do it if we can come up with an idea that’s as good as 28 Days Later.

Then the screenwriter returned After 28 weeks and explained that he and Danny Boyle were busy working on Sunshine at the time. Therefore, the studio entrusted the second opus to another team.

A different story in another world.

And for that Alex Garland, After 28 weeks It was not a complete success. He states: “I resisted for a long time because there were things that bothered me after 28 weeks. Then I thought that I would prefer to write a different story in another world.”.

Showing what the world has become 28 years after the appearance of the terrible virus and how Jimmy survived will thus create a new scene and preserve the actor’s age. We will have to wait another 8 years to see this movie, it remains to be seen…
