During today’s press conference, in which Hollywood actors confirmed they are going on strike, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, lead negotiator of the actors union (SAG-AFTRA), revealed a proposal from Hollywood studios that involves artificial intelligence replicas ( AI) of the actors.
In a statement on the strike, the Film and Television Producers Alliance (AMPTP) said its proposal included “a breakthrough artificial intelligence proposal that protects the digital likenesses of SAG-AFTRA member actors.”
When asked about such a “breakthrough proposal” at the press conference, Crabtree-Ireland explained its contents, mocking the AMPTP speech:
This “revolutionary” artificial intelligence proposal that they presented to us yesterday proposes that our extras can be scanned, receive a payday and their companies must have this scan, their image, their likeness and be able to use it to the rest of eternity in any project they wish, without consent and without compensation. So if you think this is a revolutionary proposition, I suggest you think again.

The use of generative AI has been a major point of contention in the negotiations between the two sides (it’s also a major issue behind the writers’ strike), and in her opening statement at the press conference, the SAG president – AFTRA, Fran Drescher, said:
If we don’t stand still now, we’re all in trouble, we risk being replaced by machines.
