Fans and family organize a tribute to MC Daleste at Itaim Paulista

The assassination of MC Daleste, one of the greatest talents of ostentação funk, turns 10 in 2023; crime remains unanswered

10 years ago, the East Side lost one of its biggest funk talents: MC Daleste. At the age of 20, the singer was shot during a performance in a residential complex in Campinas (SP), at the height of his career. And so that the artist’s memory is preserved, fans and family are organizing a tribute to the funk artist this Sunday (16th).

The event “Funk Review” will be at Itaim Paulista Culture Factory, starting at 2pm. There will also be the presence of MCs from the region and friends, with the aim of perpetuating the legacy of Daniel Pedreira Senna Pellegrini, as well as highlighting his trajectory as a source of inspiration for the youth of the neighbourhood.

Layza Souza, 19, is one of the people involved in organizing the event and has also been a Daleste fan since she was very young. “The community, the artists and the fans have been so supportive, they loved the idea, embraced it and are working hard to make the most of this very special event,” she says.

The young woman also underlines the importance of keeping the artist’s name alive. “I think it’s very important to bring her voice closer to everyone who loves funk music. Especially because talking about funk and not remembering MC Daleste is unacceptable. The idea is to always keep his memory alive. He is eternal in us,” completes Layza, who works as an assistant to the promotion and articulation team of the Culture Factory in Itaim Paulista.

For Márcia Silva Melo, 44, creator of Daleste’s main fan club, the “Goddess of Flaunt”, the homage is a way to keep it from falling into oblivion. “It’s also an opportunity to learn about who Daniel was, an inspiration to many young people,” he adds.

ostentatious funk icon

Daniel Pedreira Senna Pellegrini came from a low-income family in Penha, east of São Paulo. He lost his mother early and grew up in a wooden shack on the outskirts of the neighborhood.

A talent on the rise, the young man became an MC and an icon of ostentatious funk. The singer portrayed the everyday life of the suburbs in hits such as “More Love Less Repression” AND “Smuggler’s Mother”.

At the time of the murder, on July 7, 2013, an investigation was opened by the Homicide Division of the General Investigation Police Commissioner (DIG), but no suspects were found. The reopening of the investigation has not gone ahead so far due to lack of evidence. 10 years later, the crime remains unexplained.
