Five men were sentenced to preventive detention after they were accused of forcing a young woman, also German, to have sex in a hotel room. The case took place on the island of Majorca, a popular holiday destination, the 18-year-old, also German.
The defendants, aged between 20 and 21, were taken to court in the island’s capital Palma. His defense requested that they be released on bail, but the request was denied. A sixth man, also arrested, was released.
According to Spanish police, in a press conference, the alleged victim met a man on Thursday in Ballermann, an area of Mallorca with bars and nightclubs popular with young Germans. She agreed to go with the man to her hotel room, but was denied entry by reception because she was not a guest there.
The two then went to a nearby hotel, where five of the man’s friends were staying. Later, when these friends arrived in the room, four of them allegedly forced the woman to perform sexual acts and one of her suspects filmed the act with her cell phone.
The woman managed to escape to the bathroom and then leave the room, according to authorities. She then alerted the police and was taken to the hospital for examination. The suspects were later arrested.
Preventive detention can last for months in Spain and rape is punishable by up to 12 years in prison.
“German herd”
In the Spanish media, the suspects were referred to as manada alemana (German herd), drawing a parallel with a gang rape that took place in the Spanish city of Pamplona in 2016. On that occasion, five young men raped a young woman at the entrance to a house and filmed the act, in a case that became known as La manada.
An initially lenient sentence against these men has sparked demonstrations across the country. Subsequently, the criminals were sentenced to 15 years in prison by the Spanish Supreme Court and the law on sex crimes was changed.
