Batman: Batman (1966)

“Batman” is based on the popular 1960s “Batman” television series, known for its camp and comedic style, with a light-hearted and humorous tone.

The film maintains the playfulness present in the series and follows the adventures of the dynamic duo Batman (Adam West) and Robin (Burt Ward).

In the storyline, the heroes face different villains such as the Joker (Cesar Romero), the Penguin (Burgess Meredith), Catwoman (Lee Meriwether) and the Riddler (Frank Gorshin).

Batman (1989)

Tim Burton presented a dark and gothic atmosphere in “Batman”, something unheard of for a hero adaptation beyond the comics until then. That film was a huge success and established ‘Batmania’ at the turn of the 1980s and 1990s, ushering in a new era for Batman in popular culture and revitalizing public interest in the character.

Michael Keaton lives Bruce Wayne/Batman, and Jack Nicholson lends his character to the Joker, perfectly combining the comic and psychotic side of the villain. Kim Basinger plays the hero’s love interest.

Besides the dark atmosphere, the film also featured a world of violence and crime.

The Return of Batman (1992)

The large commercial impact of ‘Batman’ has led to a series of Batman films. ‘Batman Returns’ was the next sequel and brought back Tim Burton as director and Michael Keaton as the Dark Knight.

The film further intensified the dark, gothic atmosphere and violent sequences of Gotham City. Burton has deftly managed to balance these elements with a politically satirical tone, precise humor and risqué moments.

The plot takes place during Christmas, when Gotham City is threatened by three characters: the seductive and mysterious Catwoman (Michelle Pfeiffer), the grotesque and vengeful Penguin (Danny DeVito) and the cunning businessman Max Shreck (Christopher Walken). .

Batman Forever (1995)

Joel Schumacher takes the helm of this sequel to the Batman franchise featuring a more camp, playful, colorful, campy and childish approach than Tim Burton’s previous films.

Now, Batman is played by Val Kilmer. Tommy Lee Jones and Jim Carrey bring glitz and affectation to their roles as villains Two-Face and the Riddler, respectively.

In the storyline, Batman gets help from a young acrobat who becomes his partner Robin (Chris O’Donnell). Also, Bruce Wayne becomes romantically involved with a psychologist, played by Nicole Kidman.

Batman and Robin (1997)

“Batman & Robin” is the fourth and final film in the “Batman” franchise, starring George Clooney as millionaire Wayne/Batman and Chris O’Donnell reprising his role as Robin.

Still under the direction of Schumacher, the film repeats the extravagant approach, full of vibrant colors and camp elements.

The story features villains Mr. Freeze (Arnold Schwarzenegger) and Poison Ivy (Uma Thurman). It also introduces Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), who joins the dynamic duo in their fight against evildoers.

Batman Begins (2005)

“Batman Begins” is the reboot of the Batman film franchise and serves as the first installment in Christopher Nolan’s Batman film trilogy.

This film features a more realistic and darker tone than the hero’s previous films. The film features Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne/Batman and explores the origins of the character.

The film also stars Michael Caine as Alfred the butler, Gary Oldman as Commissioner Gordon, Liam Neeson as League of Shadows leader Ra’s al Ghul, and Cillian Murphy as the evil Scarecrow.

Batman: The Dark Knight (2008)

“The Dark Knight” maintains the realistic approach of “Begins”. Nolan also directs and Bale returns as Batman.

The highlight here goes to Heath Ledger’s lauded performance as the Joker. His posthumous performance earned him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor (the actor died shortly after making the film). Also new to the cast is Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/Two-Face.

Batman: The Dark Knight Rises (2012)

Third and final film in the “realistic” Batman trilogy by Christopher Nolan and Christian Bale.

The plot takes place eight years after the events of “The Dark Knight”. Gotham City is in a period of peace, but faces a new threat: the terrorist Bane (Tom Hardy).

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

Directed by Zack Snyder, this film features a clash between two of DC Comics’ most popular heroes. It is a direct sequel to the Superman solo film “Man of Steel” (2013).

Ben Affleck lives Batman in this production which was part of DC’s attempt to create a cinematic universe of heroes similar to Marvel’s. Affleck also embodied the hero in “Justice League” and ”.

The production is also directed by Zack Snyder and was known to have several production problems. In 2021, another version of the film, Snyder Cut, was released with more scenes and another cut.

Batman (2022)

Robert Pattinson's Batman

Under the direction of Matt Reeves, “The Batman” brings back the character’s signature dark mood.

This film flirts with 90s crime thrillers and features a more detective Batman, something that was always present in the comics, but had never been explored more fully in cinema.

The hero is played by Robert Pattinson, which gives the character a more melancholic atmosphere.
