Director Christopher Nolan’s new film, ‘Oppenheimer’ was shot in IMAX and 70mm, but will be shown in different formats starting this Thursday (20). And only 30 cinemas worldwide will broadcast the original – 70mm IMAX – reels of the film.
For those in a hurry:
Because it was captured on film with IMAX equipment – the Canadian brand responsible for creating the format – only that company’s theaters are able to, shall we say, show the film in its entirety and originality.
For Brazilian moviegoers on duty, bad news: none of these theaters are in Brazil. But the theaters here will show, yes, IMAX versions of the film, only more modest.
‘Oppenheimer’: A Movie of Large Aspect Ratio (Literally)
The original roll of film has a thickness of 70 mm, a length of 18 km and a weight of 272 kg. And, according to the list released by IMAX, the theaters that will shoot this colossus are distributed as follows:
Interestingly, this doesn’t mean that anyone who watches “Oppenheimer” in any other format will have a bad experience.
The chosen option is in line with the technology available in cinemas, which offers quality and, above all, impeccable content.
In the video below, Jay Trautman – who worked for a year as an assistant editor on “Oppenheimer” – explains the differences between the formats:
The film
“Oppenheimer” is a historical drama film directed by Nolan and based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning biopic “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer,” written by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin.
Set in World War II, the feature film (three hours) follows the life of J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy), a theoretical physicist at the University of California and director of the Los Alamos Laboratory during the Manhattan Project, whose mission was to design and build the first atomic bombs.
The plot accompanies the physicist and a group of other scientists throughout the process of developing the nuclear weapon responsible for the tragedies in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan, in 1945.
In addition to Cillian Murphy, the cast includes other well-known names. Among them are: Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Gary Oldman, Gustaf Skarsgård and Rami Malek.
The movie hits theaters on July 21 – coincidentally, the same day as “Barbie.”
