In an audio commentary on the film, Elf Legolas’s translator recounts how he met Billy Boyd (Pippin) and how the two future members of the Ring Partnership met on a plane.
In the 15 months it took Peter Jackson and his crew to film The Lord of the Rings, many friendships were born between the various characters in this giant work, adapted from a friendship that Tolkien signed almost 50 years ago.
Indeed, as we see when we listen to the testimonies of actors a few years later, or when we discover different forms of films, the creation of this monumental trilogy – despite its titanic challenges – was first and foremost one. – A kind of human adventure.
And while the connections between the actors were clearly established during the filming, which eventually made them members of a real “community”, some of the fraternities even started before they came to the set. This is the case, for example, with Orlando Bloom, the Elf Legolas translator, and Billy Boyd as the Hobbit Pippin.
Thus, the two actors, who have never seen each other in their lives, met by chance at the airport, before flying to the middle of the earth (or rather to New Zealand, where the filming took place).
“I came from London with Bill “– says Orlando Bloom in the audio commentary of the film. “We met one of the money changers at Heathrow. We checked our bags and met the money changers. I asked for the New Zealand dollar and Billy, who was going there, said, ‘You must have been an elf.’ ‘I said,’ Billy Boyd! We hugged each other. ‘
This first completely spontaneous meeting then continued on the plane to Wellington, where the two actors got to know each other better, most likely exchanging their thoughts on the work in which they were preparing to participate as two future friends on their way home. Same summer camp:
“We did not know each other, I did not know how it was. It was crazy. We traveled together. We got to know each other. We learned the poem on the plane from the beginning of the book. It was. Excellent.”
Fascinated by the idea of sharing the common experiences of the actors, the two young actors at the time probably had no idea about the scale of the adventures they were going to take part in.
