Corinthians battles on the pitch, beats Universitario and qualifies for the Sul-Americana

Match won by the San Paolo team 2-1 with five expulsions and control on the pitch in the final stretch due to confusion between the two teams

The Corinthians went through a real battle in Lima get a place in the round of 16 of the South American. Away from home, the team withstood the pressure of University, suffered a police bungling on the pitch and five dismissals in the closing minutes to win the continental competition playoff second leg 2–1. Now the team will have the Newell’s old boys as an opponent for one of the places in the quarterfinals.

The Corinthians did well in Peru’s capital. With Universitario and fans trying to apply pressure from the first minute of the match, the São Paulo team managed to suffer little. In the first phase, goalkeeper Carlos Miguel only worked in the final stretch with two secure defences. In the second half, the Peruvians pressed, but it was the Luxembourger who opened the scoring, with Maycon. The home team leveled the score in the run, taking a penalty, but created shortly afterwards.

Furthermore, Corinthians scored through Ryan after a fine individual play by Róger Guedes. After the 2-1 draw, widespread confusion halted the match for around 10 minutes and resulted in five red cards. When the ball rolled again, the Peruvians pressed, stopped on the crossbar and the vacant place remained with the Brazilians.

Supported by more than 80,000 people, who filled the Monumental de Lima stadium, Universitario started the game trying to occupy the frontline and putting pressure on Corinthians in the first minutes. Despite this, Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s team didn’t feel the match so much and, after 15 minutes, started exchanging passes in the offensive field.

In the second half of the first half, Universitario had two more dangerous arrivals and Carlos Miguel made two fine saves to keep it 0-0 in Lima. In the final minutes, based on crosses and extended balls in attack, the Peruvian team tried to open the scoring and was sorry for the poor quality in the definition of the plays.

Needing at least one goal, Universitario continued to press in the second phase and twice scared the San Paolo defense in the first five minutes. With that, the fans in the stands flared up and Corinthians seemed to feel some pressure in Lima for the first time in the match.

Corinthians’ first goal of the second half came in the 22nd minute, Róger Guedes stopping goalkeeper Romero. However, the Luxembourg team continued to press and opened the scoring two minutes later. After Guilherme Biro’s cross from the left, Guedes stopped the post and Maycon appeared from the spot to finish strongly and open the scoring.

Needing two goals to at least lead to penalties, Universitario went on the attack and managed to reduce. After playing from the right, the referee scored a penalty after Guilherme Biro touched the penalty area. In the penalty shootout, Flores kicked hard, overcame Carlos Miguel and left everything the same.

In the final stretch, however, the Universitario launches the attack and scares the Brazilian defense little. Also, Corinthians killed the game. In the 48th minute, Róger Guedes charged across the pitch, crossed the line and finished the cross. Goalkeeper Romero rebounded and young Ryan came in with the ball and it all made it 2-1.

field police

After Corinthians’ second goal, the game stopped. Also in Ryan’s party, the University players started a mix-up and the police present at the stadium entered the field. The disagreement between the two teams lasted about 10 minutes. When the ball rolled again, the Peruvians pressed, stopped on the crossbar and the vacant place remained with the Brazilians.
