See You in Tokyo Trailer: The unique concept of this romantic comedy will amaze you

July 26 follows each other and they are not alike… This is the day they met, the day they fell in love, the day they broke up. Seven encounters between a professional dancer and a female taxi driver in present-day Tokyo.

Taxi lovers

This is a synopsis of Rendez-vous à Tokyo, in theaters this July 26. Behind this short and mysterious summary lies a new feature film by Japanese director Daigo Matsui. We discover the love story of Yo and Teruo, or rather the story of their breakup. He is a taxi driver and an attentive ear to hundreds of passengers, he is a former dancer.

And if you might believe that the movie starts with them meeting, it doesn’t, because it opens with the estranged couple instead. Their relationship is then given to us to discover through their seven meetings on July 26, like a countdown.

Beyond this unique narrative structure that allows it to deftly pull the pin from the world of romantic comedies, Rendez-vous à Tokyo is based on a polished and highly refined staging that highlights the talents of its two leads.

Discovered for his role as Haigen, Katsumoto’s nephew in The Last Samurai and recently seen in Family Affair, Susuke Ikematsu shines as this dancer-turned-lighting designer, while Sairi Iro (Suzume) explodes on screen. Yo, a woman full of surprises, questions and who makes us laugh as well as hurts us.

A film to behold and one that you will definitely want to watch to soak up all the subtleties.

See you in Tokyo on July 26 at the cinema.
