‘I Am Groot’: Everything we know about the Baby Groot animated series

The little tree from Guardians of the Galaxy is getting its own cartoon spin-off.

After the success of ‘What If…’, which already has its second season underway, Marvel Studios is preparing several animated series for Disney +. In November 2021, the series of ‘Marvel Zombies’ and ‘Spider-Man: Freshman Year’ and ‘X-Men ’97’ were announced, two reboots of the company’s classic cartoons in the 90s; but before them, another previously announced project is expected to arrive, at Disney Investor Day 2020: ‘I Am Groot’ (‘I am Groot’).

The charismatic character of the Guardians of the Galaxy will thus have his own series, this time animated, which will accompany the live action films of ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’ and its Christmas special. Unlike Marvel’s other animated projects, however, this time it’sthey were very short chapters, Baby Groot short filmsin the manner of ‘Shaun the Sheep’ by Aardman studios or the Mickey Mouse animated shorts.

In addition, ‘I am Groot’ will stand out from the other projects animated by a photorealistic animation that will be closer to the design of the character in the movies than to the drawing of the comics. And who knows, if the Baby Groot thing works as well as it should, maybe we’ll have a similar series soon for Baby Yoda.

This is everything we know about ‘I Am Groot’the animated series.

    ‘I Am Groot’: Release date

The Guardians of the Galaxy have a tight schedule for this 2022 and 2023, with a first appearance in ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ in July, the Christmas special in December and the third film in May 2023, so it was to be expected. that ‘I Am Groot’ was released in between some of these projects.

Taking into account that the appearance of Groot has not been confirmed for the Christmas Special at the moment, it was possible that the series premiered either shortly before December 2022 or at the beginning of 2023 but, finally, I Am Groot will premiere on Disney+ on August 10, 2022..

    ‘I Am Groot’: Synopsis

According to the first announcement for the animated series, ‘I Am Groot’ “will introduce Baby Groot along with several new and unusual characters who will join him in a series of shorts.” A description that comes to say nothing of the plot, but that was nuanced in November 2021: “the series follows the glory days of Baby Groot growing up and getting into trouble among the stars“. It is still very little information, but will we see Baby Groot grow up before ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’? It does not seem that he will be the adult of the first installment again, but nothing rules out that we can meet a Groot teenager, right?

According to Vin Diesel, who voices Groot in the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, the series will develop a story in which Groot will return to his home planet, Planet X.

There is also a Marvel comic titled precisely ‘I Am Groot’, by the writer Christopher Hastings and the cartoonist Flavian. Published in 2017, after the first movie in which we saw Baby Groot, the comic was presented with the following synopsis:

When the Guardians of the Galaxy are trapped in a wormhole, a smaller-than-normal Groot is separated billions of light-years from the team. Falling to a lower planet, Groot discovers that he is in a totally alien and unknown world, full of strange creatures and societies. Severely underdeveloped and with no one to understand him, Groot will have to make the journey to the center of this world and find his way back to his family.

Despite its anthology format through animated short films, ‘I Am Groot’ will be part of the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, within Phase 4, so we will have to be very attentive to what happens in the series.

Cast of ‘I Am Groot’: Which characters will we see?

We do not know anything about the cast of the series but the most likely, although it is yet to be confirmed, is that Vin Diesel re-dub the hyper-realistic Groot just like in the rest of the character’s movies.

We also know from some pictures of the story board that it was made public, that we will see Drax the Destroyer. So it’s likely dave baptist is back giving voice to his character.
