Reigning European champions, the English selection had difficulty beating the Haitian selection in its World Cup debut.
Favorites for the world title, England made their debut in the World Cup and had difficulty beating the Haitian team by the score of 1 to 0. The goal was scored by Georgia Stanway, again in the first half, from a penalty kick.
FIRST TIME BUSY
Entering the field as one of the main favorites for the world title, England started the game surprised by the Haitian team, very well positioned in defense, but which saved itself in dangerous counter-attacks, especially with midfielder Durmonay.
Haiti’s defensive posture forced England to play the ball in the centre, without scaring Kelly Théus’ goal too much. But, from a corner, Batcheba Louis touched the ball with his hand and after VAR review, the penalty was scored for England. Georgia Stanway stops Théus on the first kick, which is repeated after the video referee’s control catches the goalkeeper’s advance.
At the second opportunity, Stanway did not waste and, hitting the same corner, opened the scoring for the reigning European champions. Even with the goal, the England side couldn’t find ways to break through the strong Haitian defence, and when they did get through the defensive line, it stopped at Kelly Théus, on a very inspiring evening.

SECOND HALF MORE BALANCED
After half-time, the Haitian team continued to defend, but without giving up the attack. Relying on the quality of Dumornay to set up play, Haiti came in with danger and forced England goalkeeper Mary Earps to come into the match and prevent an equalizer from occurring.
On the other hand, Kelly Théus continued an inspired evening and stopped the English attacks, especially with striker Alessia Russo, who forced the Haitian goalkeeper to make at least two great saves.
Despite a very eventful game, the score remained the same as in the first half. England secured victory at the opening of the World Cup and the momentary leadership of group D, as China and Denmark, the other two teams in the group, still face each other in group, managing to take the lead.
NEXT STEPS
England are back on the field next Friday, the 28th, at 5:30 (Brasilia time) to face Denmark. The Haitian team will face China, also on the 28th, at 8 in the morning (Brasilia time).
