The actors’ strike that began in recent weeks has highlighted Hollywood’s fear of artificial intelligence. Artists have joined writers in a movement not seen in 60 years.
Among the main requests of the actors is greater control of artificial intelligence tools. It may seem that technology is still far from being able to replace real people with digital figures, but is it?
Information that emerged after the strike began includes possible deals where the studios intended to add a lifetime right to digital use of the actors’ image in new contracts.
“If it wasn’t such a big deal planning to use artificial intelligence to replace actors, it would be obvious to include it in the contract and make us sleep easier,” Carly Turro, actress known for the series ‘Homeland’, told Reuters.
“The fact that they don’t is terrifying when you think about the future of arts and entertainment as a career.”
virtual actors? the fear is real
Also in an interview with the agency, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, the union’s chief negotiator, said the actors fear their work is being used to generate synthetic performers who can take their place.
The negotiator also explains that the group is not totally against the use of AI, but wants to have rules and laws governing its use in the artistic environment to prevent actors from losing their jobs.
The studios have agreed to notify the union if they intend to use virtual actors in a production, to give the agency a chance to respond.
However, the strike still appears to be far from over. Productions in Hollywood remain at a standstill and studios seem reluctant to rule out the use of AI to replace actors at this point.
Another talking point is the use of this technology to replace extras. The studios plan to include a clause when hiring extras that allows the image to be used in AI.
“What that really means is these companies will tell extras, ‘If you don’t give us the required consent, we won’t hire you and replace you with someone else,'” said Crabtree-Ireland. “This is not a meaningful consensus.”
