Julia Garner (Ozark, Inventing Anna) has been officially approached to play Madonna in the Universal Pictures biopic. Moreover, the singer herself will become the director. She will also write the screenplay for the project with Diablo Cody, Oscar winner for Juno. According to The Hollywood Reporter, it is not yet clear at what stage the deal is.
The actress, who competed for the role alongside Florence Pugh, Odessa Young and Alexa Demi, worked with the singer’s choreographer for many months, and also practiced singing and reading with Madonna herself.
So far, it is only known that the film will be dedicated to Madonna’s ascent to the top of the music charts and her transformation into a style icon who managed to become the best-selling artist of all time (335 million records worldwide).
