This Sunday morning (23rd), Sweden and South Africa met, at the Wellington Stadium, and the Swedes achieved a 2-1 comeback victory.
With this victory Sweden lead Group G with three points. The Swedes will be back on the field next Saturday (29th) at 4:30, against Italy, at the Sky Stadium, in a match valid for the 2nd round of the group stage of the Women’s World Cup.
With this defeat, South Africa are bottom of group G, with zero points. The South Africans will be back on the field next Thursday (27) at 21, against Argentina, at the Forsyth Barr Stadium, in a match valid for the 2nd round of the group stage of the women’s World Cup.
FIRST TIME
The first phase started with both teams studying each other, but after a while the scenario adapted and the Swedes began to dominate ball possession. In the 5th minute, however, the Africans arrive first with a shot over the goal. A few minutes later, Jane tried from midfield, but she was sent just wide. After good chances from their opponents, Sweden made a proven move which ended in a calm defense by Swart. In the sequence South Africa bothers again, but nothing very concrete goals, with that first half closed to zero.
SECOND TIME
The second phase started with everything, just after two minutes, Magaia took advantage of the Swedish goalkeeper’s left foot and opened the scoring of the match. In the sequence, Sweden got back into the game and went in search of an equaliser, which arrived in the 20th minute after a very confused action by Rolfo, who took the surplus and pushed it towards the end of the goal. In the 44th minute, after much pressure from Sweden, Ilestedt took advantage of the aerial play and scored the goal of the European comeback that took them to the top of group G.
