“Elvis”: Why wasn’t Harry Styles cast in the lead role?

“Elvis,” the new film from Warner Bros. Pictures will explore the life and music of Elvis Presley, one of the greatest singers of the 20th century known as The King of Rock. Directed by Baz Luhrmann, the director considered singer Harry Styles the lead for a long time, but ended up deciding on Austin Butler.

When the name of the former One Direction member was mentioned to play Elvis, the hype around the artist skyrocketed, with fans even betting on his pick. In an interview with the Australian podcast Fitzy & Wippa, Luhrmann explained that what took the pop stardom out of contention was the fact that he was already “an icon”, something that interfered with the constructive essence of the film.

“Harry is a very talented actor. I’d work on something with him, [mas] the real problem with Harry is that he’s Harry Styles. He is already an icon. Harry and I had really gotten somewhere, I mean, he desperately wanted to put on the suit and explore. He has a great spirit and I have nothing but great things to say about Harry Styles.

In addition to Styles, Ansel Elgort and Miles Teller (“Top Gun: Maverick”) were also considered for the role, but both lost to Butler, who received critical acclaim for his performance – being described as a “emerging actor” and with the forecasts of Oscar nominations.

“Elvis” recently won a trailer with more than three minutes. In addition to Butler, the cast will also have Tom Hanks, who will play Colonel Tom Parker, the artist’s famous enigmatic manager. The film will debut in Brazilian theaters on July 14.
