The feature starring Halle Bailey (grow-ish) hit theaters last May and is already considered a hit even before its premiere on the platform. With over $566.5 million in worldwide grossing, the film is the sixth highest-grossing film of the year.
The production was surrounded by much criticism and controversy, mainly from more conservative groups who did not support the decision to change protagonist Ariel’s ethnicity. Despite this, Bailey’s performance as the undersea princess was pretty much a consensus among critics, which praised her charisma as the film’s highlight.
Anyway, The little Mermaid it was quite divisive in general opinion. With an average of 67% on Rotten Tomatoes, a site that aggregates the notes of international critics, many have wondered about the very need to remake the 1989 animated classic or even to give more space to characters like Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer -King) and the Scuttlebird (Awkwafina). In addition, the visual effects and the attempt to mix realistic images with more cartoonish features in the fish have become a meme on social networks.
At the same time, none of this seems to have bothered the public. Also on Rotten, the average among viewers is 94%, demonstrating how well Halle Bailey’s Ariel has been received by fans of the princess.

Part of this good reception could lie precisely in the care that the new version has brought to the original material. The little Mermaid is one of Disney’s most notable animations, being responsible for starting the studio’s so-called Renaissance Era, in the early 1990s, when a new wave of classics hit theaters, such as The beauty and the Beast, Aladdin AND The Lion King.
exclusive content
the first of The little Mermaid on Disney + also comes with some new features left out of the cinema. The studio has announced that the stream will receive as extra content the deleted scene in which King Triton (Javier Barden) sings the song Impossible Child, an original song created for the remake in collaboration between Lin-Manuel Mirando and the legendary Alan Menken, responsible for the songs from the 1989 cartoon.
