Former PRF director Silvinei Vasques arrested in operation for interference in elections, says source

Former Federal Traffic Police Director General Silvinei Vasques was arrested by federal police on Wednesday in an operation to investigate PRF interference in the second round of the 2022 election, a source close to the action told Reuters.

Preventive detention took place in Florianópolis (SC)

“He was arrested and will still be taken on a PF plane to Brasilia today,” the source said in secret.

In the second round of last year’s presidential elections, the PRF then commanded by Vasques carried out operations and raids on the streets of the Northeast, delaying the arrival of voters at polling stations.

This attracted attention and raised suspicions of an attempt to interfere in the election.

“It was very clear. There was no reason or motive,” the source added.

Silviano had met former president Jair Bolsonaro before the second round, and the Superior Electoral Tribunal had to establish the end of the blitz so as not to interrupt the elections.

According to the source, potential crimes under investigation include attempts to prevent or disrupt voting, political violence and abuse.
