The author sues Apple for the film “Tetris”; understand the case

Gizmodo editor-in-chief Dan Ackerman has filed a lawsuit in federal court in Manhattan accusing Apple and the Tetris Company of unauthorized copying the content of his book about the iconic puzzle game to create a feature film.

Ackerman says the film uses several specific sections and events from the book, being similar to it in nearly every way.

According to the lawsuit, the Tetris Company, which holds the rights to the brand globally, refused to license related intellectual property rights to other projects related to the book, preventing more interested manufacturers from adapting it.

Ackerman’s literary masterpiece focused on action sequences and contradictory relationships between players (…) This was the same approach that the defendants took for the film, without notable material distinctions.

So far, no company involved has commented on the case, informs the Reuters. Ackerman says he reached out after the Tetris trailer was released and unsuccessfully requested that Apple and the other defendants address legal issues before the film’s release.

The film premiered on the Apple TV platform in March. The plot involves game salesman Henk Rogers, who faces a dangerous web of lies and corruption when he discovers the game Tetris, in 1988. Ackerman is demanding cash compensation equivalent to at least 6% of the production budget, which was 80 million dollars (about BRL 392 million).

Ackerman’s book, published in 2016, tells the story of the game’s Soviet origins and the fight for global licensing rights in the midst of the Cold War.
