Taylor Swift donated free music for ‘Heartstopper’

Singer Taylor Swift provided the song “Seven”, from the album ‘Folklore’ (2020), as a courtesy for the ‘Heartstopper’ season 2 soundtrack. The song was used in a scene between lesbian couple Tara (Corinna Brown) and Darcy (Kizzy Edgell) in the season finale.

When fans wondered if the production paid a fortune for the rights to the song, series musical director Matt Biffa revealed on Twitter/X that Taylor gave the song away for free so it could be in the series, stating : “Sometimes art is worth more than money”.

The scene with the music

“Seven” is played after the main characters leave prom to party at Nick’s (Kit Connor) house, away from the judgmental gazes of classmates. The scene is punctuated by a stressful night for Tara, who she thought was being dumped at prom, only to find Darcy has run away from home after an argument with her homophobic mother.

The scene climaxes with Tara and Darcy opening up to each other, with Darcy admitting that she slept in the park and revealing that she didn’t come out to her parents.

Taylor Swift’s decision

Executive producer Patrick Waters said that after seeing the cut of the scene, the crew felt they needed Taylor Swift’s music. And he expressed his gratitude for the singer’s kind attitude, saying, “Taylor Swift really came to our aid.”

Matt Biffa confirmed on Twitter/X that Taylor saw the scene in question before agreeing to hand over the rights. In front of the images, he felt that the song should be in the series.

In context, Taylor Swift’s music added emotional depth to the storyline, highlighting Sapphic love and strange joy.

The series has already been renewed for a third season by Netflix, and Taylor Swift’s contributions to the series are a testament to her popularity, prominence, and artists’ willingness to back projects that reflect their ideals.
