Virtual reality (VR) headsets and haptic vests (those that provide sensations you would experience in real life) are the primary immersion tools of a film showcasing the rave movement of the 80s in the UK. In “In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats” there is a multisensory journey into the past, following a musical (and social) revolution that took place a few decades ago.
In the storyline is the life and stories of promoters, police, and rave-goers (as well as the friction between everyone who was thrust into that scene). Meanwhile, room-wide multi-sensory interactive virtual reality allows participants to experience what it would be like to be in the most problematic environments (the apprehension, excitement and exhilaration that was “Acid House”).
Feeling the rave in the skin
Director Darren Emerson’s award-winning film is set in Coventry, UK. There are scenes where you find yourself in the backseat of a car or in a friend’s room (surrounded by posters on the wall). In others, you’re in a police station, hurtling down a highway, and finally dancing and meeting sweaty bodies on a club floor (and then walking hungover at dawn).
The manual controls also aid in immersion, with a wealth of detail rendered in 360 degrees. Much can be explored, as if it were in a video game.
And dancing… there’s a lot of dancing, a lot of rave in the film created with high-tech virtual reality. Songs that marked the era and more modern songs are played “finally”!
In Pursuit of Repetitive Beats is a 35 minute full body experience. It is displayed by programmed way in some places around the world (this year it will also be screened in film festivals in Australia and Switzerland).
The post-VR experience generates a deep immersion in the rave culture film that first appeared on Olhar Digital.
