Dorival reprimanded with referee after penalty: ‘We could score more points in the league’

After São Paulo’s 1-1 draw against Flamengo, coach Dorival Júnior held a press conference at the Maracanã. When questioned about Michel Araújo’s second-half added-time penalty, the coach avoided causing controversy, but said the conduct of the referee in recent matches was annoying.

– I will not talk about it (penalty). Unfortunately we dropped a lot of points during the competition and perhaps the main factor is not a penalty but the driving, which for me is what damaged what our team was producing – began Dorival.

Soon after, the coach said that São Paulo could have eight or nine more points in the competition than they currently have, if it weren’t for the refereeing in matches.

Despite the dissatisfaction with the refereeing, Dorival praised the team he sent to the Maracanã, practically all reserve. The changes were made thinking about next Wednesday’s derby against Corinthians (16), for the Copa do Brasil.

– I’m very happy because, even so (with a reserve team) we had a very good organization throughout the 90 minutes, also facing one of the best teams in the country. Playing with personality, wanting the result, I think it was a very interesting game on our part – he concluded -.

San Paolo is back on the field next Wednesday (16) for the Copa do Brasil semifinal, where they face Corinthians in Morumbi, needing to overturn the first leg score (2 to 1). To advance, the Tricolor must beat their rival by at least two goals away. Winning on goal difference takes the decision of the vacancy to a penalty shootout.
