Porto Alegre is preparing to host the seventh edition of the Cultural Heritage Week, an event promoted by the Municipal Secretariat for Culture and the Creative Economy (SMCEC). With a free and varied programme, Porto Alegre residents will have the opportunity to get involved in a range of activities that explore the region’s rich history and cultural heritage. The celebrations, which continue until August 20, are intrinsically linked to the National and State Day of Cultural Heritage, celebrated on August 17.

The program includes a range of cultural experiences, from guided walks in the historic center to conversation clubs, an antiques fair, exhibitions, art workshops and dance and music presentations. This diversity of activities aims to celebrate and promote appreciation of local cultural heritage, engaging both residents and visitors to the city.

The events of the Cultural Heritage Week are organized by the Directorate of Heritage and Memory, together with the SMCEC team of Historical and Cultural Heritage. Among the attractions, the “Experience the Center on Foot – Streets I haven’t traveled” stands out, a walk that crosses the historic center, revealing stories and curiosities about the local streets and squares. In addition, “Patrimônio na Praça” will transform Praça Dom Sebastião into a place of night celebrations, with a fair and events, offering a safe and culturally enriching experience.

Diversity is a hallmark of Cultural Heritage Week and exhibitions play a crucial role in this narrative. The exhibition “Unlimited City: Otto Wagner (1841-1918)” highlights modernity in architecture through reproductions of historical drawings and photos from the Vienna Museum, while “Black Women from POA” honors the contribution of black women to the city. Additionally, the Museu de Porto Alegre Joaquim Felizardo hosts exhibits that explore everything from urban legends to portraits that celebrate the citizens who shape the city.

With a wide range of activities and enriching experiences, the 7th Cultural Heritage Week is a unique opportunity for Porto Alegre residents to get in touch with their cultural and historical heritage, reinforcing the importance of heritage in the city’s identity . To participate in the activities, simply consult the calendar and places published by SMCEC and enjoy this celebration of local culture and memory.
