We all remember how impressive it was the first time we saw Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone – the escalators, Ollivanders wand, the dark prologue, the potions lessons taught by Snape and of course the first spell Harry cast . Yes, that spell.

The truth is, the Boy Who Lived didn’t come close to expanding his spell repertoire early in the saga: throughout the first film, it’s worth noting, he can’t cast a spell properly. He even tries a “Wingardium Leviosa”, which comes out quite well (because he, he remembers him, he says “Leviosa”, not “Leviosá”). The rest of the magical moments in the storyline don’t require the wand spells he was supposed to practice—not even in his first broom lesson did he use a spell himself, and he only used the word “up.”




In fact, the boy wizard’s first wand spell doesn’t come until a confrontation with Draco during the story of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. And the most curious thing about this is that this is not a cinematic license or a major flaw in the adaptation of the original literary work of the author JK Rowling.

If we go back to the first book, even the protagonist doesn’t cast a single spell, not even a “Lumus” – he even says that he has to practice them as homework, but we never see him do it…
