The death toll from the Maui wildfires stood at 99 as of Monday, a figure expected to rise as search crews scoured areas where the blaze was moving at speeds of up to one mile per minute.
The fires, which destroyed most of the historic town of Lahaina, are already the deadliest in the United States in more than a century, according to AP News. Their cause is still under investigation. A total of 1,418 people were in emergency evacuation shelters Friday night, according to CNN, and more than 2,200 structures were destroyed, 86% of them residential, according to Hawaii Gov. Josh Green.

According to Josh Green, the damage was estimated at about $6 billion as aid began pouring in from around the world.
“The scale of the destruction is unimaginable. Our hearts are still a little more broken than when we were together 48 hours ago with the additional death” he said (via CNN) as the death toll rose. The governor also explained that it would take at least 36 weeks for the affected families to relocate.
