Controversial fan-made Spider-Man movie released for free on YouTube

“Spider-Man: Lotus” is the kind of production every fan wants to see – the film has no ties to Marvel or Sony studios and was produced by a fan of the superhero.

The film has almost two hours, real actors and an impressive quality for the type of project they propose, but it was tarnished due to the controversies involving the director and the main actor (yes, Spider-Man himself).

While it surprised fans with its technical quality, the production suffered from behind-the-scenes controversies involving the directors themselves.

Actor Warden Wayne, who plays Spider-Man, had old posts rediscovering racist comments. He admitted guilt to the site Newsweek and stated that he hoped people would watch the film without judging it for its past.

On his personal Twitter, Wayne even posted an open letter of apology, attributing the racist behavior to his time in high school, where he lived and was educated in a small, conservative US town.

Another controversy didn’t help “Spider-Man: Lotus”: the director of the feature film, Gavin J. Konop, leaked old publications in which he made racist, homophobic and sexist comments. He didn’t innovate much on the excuse, even stating that the seats were old and that he has since learned from his mistakes and tries to improve.

The apology was not convincing and the fans who had contributed to the crowdfunding to make the film asked for their money back. Several members of the visual effects team also left the production.

The feature film took off, but suffered from the setbacks caused by the controversy. The release was delayed a few times, until it hit YouTube on August 12th.

“Spider-Man: Lotus” can be watched for free on director Gavin J. Konop’s channel and already has more than two million views.
