Cinemas in mainland China saw a historic result this year: a new box office record was set almost without the help of Hollywood, with most films screened locally. Although the country resorted to Hollywood works after the return of the pandemic, adherence to this type of film dropped in 2023 and domestic successes surpassed blockbusters such as “Barbie”.

Box office with local films
Some of the locally produced films (this includes some stages of the production chain, but not necessarily all) were ‘Lost in the Stars’ (mystery drama), ‘No More Bets’ (crime-action), ‘Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms” (historical fantasy), “One and Only” (youth dance drama), “Chang An” (animation), “Never Say Never” (martial arts drama) and “Meg 2: The Trench” (adventure of action in English).
The latter is considered a local title in China as it is a co-production with Warner Bros. with Chinese CMC pictures.
Some of the movies in theaters, like ‘No More Bets’ even surpassed blockbusters like ‘Barbie’ at the domestic box office.
