What does the star on Botafogo’s shield mean?

Botafogo as we know it today was born in 1942, from the merger between Club de Regatas Botafogo, founded in 1894, and Botafogo Football Club, created in 1904.

The shield also emerged from the union between the two. The format remained the one devised by Basílio Viana Júnior, one of the founders of Botafogo Football Club, with only a white and a black outline. The famous star, on the other hand, came from the Club de Regatas Botafogo, which began to be used because, when the athletes started training at dawn, they could see the planet Venus, also known as Estrela D’Alva, in the sky. For this reason, Botafogo also received the nickname “lone star club”.

Botafogo is still one of the most traditional clubs in Brazil. With 19 Championship Carioca titles and two Brazilian titles, he has already had big names in the team such as Nilton Santos, Túlio Maravilha and Garrincha.
