Russia counters wave of drone attacks, reports damage to warplane on airport

Russia’s Defense Ministry on Saturday reported a series of Ukrainian drone strikes, which have targeted the Moscow, Novgorod regions northwest of the Russian capital, and Belgorod regions bordering Ukraine.

According to the ministry, no one was injured in the attacks, but the drone that targeted the Novgorod region damaged a warplane and caused a fire at a military airport. Novgorod region is located hundreds of kilometers from the Russian border with Ukraine.

“As a result of the terrorist attack on the territory of the airport, a fire broke out in the aircraft parking lot, which was quickly extinguished by the fire brigade. One aircraft was damaged,” the ministry said in a statement.

He later reported that an aircraft-type drone was jammed by the air defense forces in the northwest suburbs of Moscow, forcing it to crash near the Putilkovo settlement.

Drone air strikes inside Russia have intensified in recent months. On Friday, after being shot down by Russian air defense, one of the aircraft hit a building in central Moscow, disrupting air traffic at all civilian airports in the Russian capital.

Russia’s Defense Ministry also reported on Saturday of a thwarted attack by an aerial-type drone in the Belgorod region, where incidents occur almost daily. However, according to the ministry, without causing any casualties or damage.

Russian air defense forces also shot down a Ukrainian-launched missile on the Crimean peninsula overnight, the defense ministry said earlier. Crimea, which Russia annexed to Ukraine in 2014, has also seen an increase in drone and missile attacks.

Ukraine does not normally comment on who is behind the attacks on Russian territory or in Crimea, although the authorities have publicly expressed satisfaction with them.
