Jacob Elordi says extreme weight loss was a ‘blessing’ in ‘Frankenstein’

Jacob Elordi revealed that the physical exhaustion he faced in a previous project helped him take on the role of the Creature in Frankenstein, the new adaptation directed by Guillermo del Toro

In an interview with Los Angeles Times published this Thursday 16th, the actor Jacob Elordi 28-year-old said he had just finished filming the war miniseries The Narrow Path to the Northern Reachesfrom the Prime Videoin Australia — a production that required him to lose a significant amount of weight — shortly before he began working with Guilhermo del Toro.

“My brain was all over the place. I had moments of great anguish around three in the morning. I would wake up and my body would hurt a lot.”reported Elordi. “I realized that this was a blessing with Frankenstein coming, because I was able to channel these feelings, this suffering.”

The actor was cast as the Creature after Andrew Garfield left the project at the end of 2023, which gave him little time to prepare for the role. Also in the cast are Oscar Isaac — who plays Victor Frankenstein —, Mia Goth, Felix Kammerer, Lars Mikkelsen, David Bradley, Charles Dance and Christoph Waltz.

Although it entered production late, Elordi said he always found playing the monster a “fantastic idea” — curiously inspired by a negative comment received at the beginning of her career. “Someone wrote after my first film: ‘The only thing this piece of wood could play is Frankenstein’s Creature. Take him off the screen!'” recalled the actor.

During recordings of Priscilla (2023), biography of Priscilla Presley, Elordi I found out from the hair and makeup team that the next project would be precisely Frankenstein. “I felt like I was coming from somewhere else.”, he stated. “It was like a growth, a cancer in the stomach telling me that I needed to play this creature. I’ve heard stories like that from other actors and thought, ‘Okay, you were born for this role’. But in this case, I really felt like it was.”
