After Equalizer 3, which hits theaters on August 30, Antoine Fuqua is tackling an ambitious project, a biopic of the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. The latter will be portrayed by Jafar Jackson, the nephew of the star who died in 2009.
The screenplay will be signed by John Logan, a fine feather in Hollywood who has notably collaborated with Martin Scorsese (The Aviator, Hugo Cabret) and Sam Mendes (Skyfall, 007 Spectre). Additionally, the film will be produced by Lionsgate Studios and Graham King (Bohemian Rhapsody).
Will the latter, who turned Freddie Mercury’s career into a house-breaking blockbuster, do the same with Michael Jackson? Bohemian Rhapsody, which covered certain dark parts of Queen’s frontman’s life, was not unanimous in this respect.
Will this Michael Jackson feature film take the same direction, ignoring the King of Pop’s legal setbacks? Indeed, the artist was accused of pedophilia in the 1990s and acquitted in 2005 after a trial that made headlines.
Guest on the set of the program Good morning AmericaDirector Antoine Fuqua has promised that his film will be reviewed “The Good The Bad and The Ugly”or “The good the bad and the ugly.”
Michael Jackson was a great artist. He was human. We show the good and the bad.
“Michael Jackson was a great artist. He was human. We’re going to show the good and the bad. We’re going to tell Michael’s story based on the facts. Me and Graham King, the producer of Bohemian Rhapsody, we’re going to tell you the facts that we know and it’s up to the public what to do.” They’re thinking about Michael, but we’re reporting the facts as we know them.”he assured her.
The film chronicles the rise of the King of Pop, from his beginnings with the Jackson Five to his death at the age of 50. Lionsgate chairman Joe Drake is pleased to hand over the reins of the project to Antoine Fuqua. “We are very fortunate that he chose Michael as his next project. His talent and dedication to his craft make Michael an unforgettable film.”He was excited.
Although the director has become a specialist in action films with the Equalizer franchise, White House Fall or Magnificent 7, it is not surprising to see Fuqua at the helm of this project. He started his career making music videos for Prince, Lil Wayne, Toni Braxton or Stevie Wonder before breaking into cinema with Training Day in 2001.
“The first films of my career were music videos, and I still feel that the combination of cinema and music is an integral part of who I am”– said the director.
To me, no other artist has the power, charisma and pure musical genius of Michael Jackson.
“To me, no artist has the power, charisma and pure musical genius of Michael Jackson. He was a huge influence on me when I started working on music videos. He was the first black artist to be broadcast on MTV. Music and images are part of my vision of the world and his The opportunity to tell his story on screen alongside the music was irresistible.”– confided the director.
Keep in mind that biographical projects of legendary singers still have a bright future. After the success of Bohemian Rhapsody and Elvis, Bob Dylan, Madonna, Amy Winehouse or Bob Marley will also have the rights to their films.
In anticipation of the Michael Jackson biopic, Antoine Fuqua will present Equalizer 3 on August 30.
