Disney+ has canceled the series based on the fantasy books “The Spiderwick Chronicles,” according to an exclusive report from expiration. The eight-episode adaptation, produced by Paramount Television Studios and 20th Television, is now complete and is now being offered to other buyers by Paramount.
This decision is part of a strategy by Disney to reevaluate its streaming strategies, with programming cuts to boost profitability.
In May, Disney announced a major catalog reduction, resulting in a loss of approximately $1.5 billion to $1.8 billion.
Since this announcement, several original productions have been removed from both Disney+ and Hulu. In July, Disney CEO Bob Iger said there will be a decrease in production of Marvel and Star Wars series and films for Disney+. Overall, the company plans to cut about $3 billion in non-sports content spending.
Additionally, Disney+’s live-action production strategy has also been reevaluated. The idea is to focus more on content whose intellectual property is at home, such as the TV series Percy Jackson, based on books published by Hyperion Books, the publisher of Disney.
However, there will be exceptions. An example of this is the “Goosebumps” series, which will be produced by Sony TV and broadcast on both Disney+ and Hulu. Another exception is a season of the BBC’s “Doctor Who”.
There is currently new content on hold due to internal changes at Disney+.
“The Spiderwick Chronicles”
First announced in November 2021, filming for the series only started filming between 2022 and 2023. The cast includes artists such as Christian Slater, Jack Dylan Grazer and Lyon Daniels.
The story of the series is based on the bestselling books by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black. According to IMDB, the story follows the Grace Family as they move into their ancestral home and unravel a dark mystery about their great-great-grandfather, who discovered his own parallel and secret fairy world.
