“Gran Turismo” debuts in first place in the United States. But there will be the VAR

‘Gran Turismo’, the game adaptation turned drama, debuted at #1 at the US and Canadian box offices over the weekend, but grossing very low compared to its recent successful run. Ticket sales were estimated at $17.3 million, a moderate opening amid the strike preventing actors from advertising the production, which adds to the promotion of National Cinema Day, with tickets sold at low prices this Sunday (8/27).

On the international market, the box office doubled to $36.5 million. In all, the release grossed $53.8 million worldwide and Sony is betting the film will have a long life on screens after earning an A grade in CinemaScore, the poll taken directly with viewers at the exit of the halls.

“Barbie” follows closely

The detail is that the victory of “Grand Turismo” was by a hair, because “Barbie” was no less. The Warner Bros. blockbuster grossed an estimated $17.1 million, and the mere $200,000 difference between the two films could see them switch places with the official ticket tally on Monday. That is, there will be the VAR to define who is really left at the top.

Overseas, “Barbie” earned an additional $18.2 million from 75 markets, bringing its global total to a staggering $1.34 billion. This is an all-time record for Warner Bros.

The Good and Bad News of ‘Blue Beetle’

“Blue Beetle” was third in North America with an estimated $12.8 million. The value represents a decrease of only 49% from the inception performance. It is worth mentioning that ‘The Flash’ suffered a brutal 72% loss at the box office in its second week of screening.

With its earnings, the new DC superhero film made $46.3 million domestically and $81.8 million worldwide. And the value is still far from repaying its $100 million investment in production, excluding broadcasting and advertising expenses.

New landmarks of “Oppenheimer”

“Oppenheimer” is just profit. Universal’s production, which remains among the most watched, ranked 4th with $9 million and reached $300 million in domestic revenue.

Representing another milestone, “Oppenheimer” surpassed “Inception” to become director Christopher Nolan’s third highest-grossing film in the United States, behind “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” It also became the fifth highest-grossing film in the United States in 2023, surpassing ‘The Little Mermaid’.

turtle step

“Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem” rounded out the Top 5 with $6.1 million, bringing the animated adventure’s domestic gross to $98.1 million and $135 million worldwide. The Paramount production will finally debut in Brazil on Thursday (8/31).
