Joachim Trier is distantly related to the controversial Lars von Trier
This Thursday, Oslo, 31st of August (2011) completes 12 years of launch. The second film in the trilogy Oslo, from the Norwegian director Joachim Trier, explores the themes of addiction and loneliness.
the surname of Joachim may remind you of another very famous – and probably more controversial – director: lars von trier. They are distant cousins, but one has no influence on the other’s work, it is worth clarifying.
Meet the trilogy that can be considered more melancholy than the Melancholy (2011) in Lars von Trier:
Start Over (2006)
Two best friends pursue a career as writers. Although there is no competition, while Phillip (Anders DanielsenLie) manages to publish his book, Erik (Espen Klouman Hoiner — actor who curiously was born on the 31st of August) seems to experience a failure after having the manuscript rejected by the publisher.
However, when the character of anders is hit by a crisis, that of Espen finally publish Prosopopoeia. Amid professional ambitions, the two face love dilemmas. Possibilities about the future are a major concern for one of them, while the other revisits the past. Starting over It has a dramatic narrative with a comedic feel.
Oslo, 31st of August
Anders, played by the actor of the same name, leaves rehab for the day and tries to reconnect with friends and family. The character’s efforts to stay sober and get back to life, however, are not very appreciated by the people he visits. After so many attempts to get back on track, Anders’ social circle no longer credits him with credibility. The young man’s hopes are dashed as he challenges sobriety.
The film is a remake of Thirty Years Tonight (1963)in Louis Malle.
The Worst Person in the World
Julie, played by Renate Reinsve, is turning 30 years old. Age is not portrayed as synonymous with absolute maturation, as Julie sees more uncertainties than certainties in her life. From a medical student, she becomes a clerk in a bookstore. Julie is also faced with the indecision between betting on a romance with an older, more successful comic artist or falling in love with a barista as impulsive as she is. This is yet another path offered by trier for your main character to find himself.
