Finding yourself among the songs in the Virais playlist on Spotify Brasil is not easy, but even so Duquesa went there and made it. In collaboration with MC Luanna, “99 Problems” flies high and stays hot. We took the opportunity to exchange ideas with the artist and in the conversation we discovered some curiosities about the song.

Hitting is also not one of the Duchess’ 99 Problems. Two months after the launch of his project “Taurus”, “Big D” continues to collect positions in the “Viral 50” of Spotify Brazil. Now, with “99 Problems” at number 4, this is the second song from the project to make the list.

As a black woman, the need to feel represented is what drove Duquesa to make music. The artist from Bahia started as a rapper at the age of 15, but around 2018 she also started consuming and connecting with R&B, having today references such as SZA, Ari Lennox, Summer Walker, Queen Naija and other women who inspire its sound.

Strong flow, delicate singing, sensuality and representation are present in Duquesa’s music. In addition to R&B, Duquesa also dominates trap. Unapologetically authentic, with sharp verses, a potent blend of confidence, wit and unapologetic reality. With each line she offers, she addresses different themes such as empowerment, overcoming and breaking down barriers. Your flow is flawless. Whether quoting popular culture or sharing personal stories, her verses showcase a powerful artist who fearlessly embraces her uniqueness and forges her way into the male-dominated world of trap.

“Taurus”, the newest project, has all the above features. Courageous, confident and confident, Duquesa brought BARS which open a new phase for the artist. The singles “Taurus” and “Única” came with everything and were the perfect introduction to what was to come. And “99 Problems”, the song presented today, carries the theme of female independence and sexual freedom of black women, in a very direct and authentic way.

Promoting this freedom is essential to break with historical stereotypes and prejudices. Duquesa and MC Luanna value the autonomy of their bodies while defying oppressive norms. It is also worth mentioning the use of the gringa expression “99 problem”, so present in rap and used by the artists of Ice-T, passing through perhaps the most popular use, Jay Z, and other rappers such as Asap Rocky, Nicki Minaj and Flo MIli.

We spoke to the Duchess and she answered 5 questions about the hit “99 Problems”:

AUR: The theme of the song is great, how did it come about? What prompted you to write these verses?

duchess: Taurus in general was a project where I did my best to critique things that bothered me as a young Black woman within a predominantly male niche, in life, at work. 99 issues came from a reflection, with the time things were happening and I was scoring. A mocking tone, statements even towards myself.

AUR: Without context, what’s your favorite line from the song?

duchess: “If you wait for your egg to slobber, you can bet you’ll die of dry sack” kk

AUR: “Duquesa Feat. MC Luanna” is undoubtedly one of the strongest talents of the year. How did the collaboration come about?

duchess: When I thought about the mixtape, a few artist names that I like and admire came to mind. When I made the chorus of 99 Problems I knew it had to be Luana, it made so much sense!

AUR: The song ranks fourth on Spotify Virals. How does it feel to see your music reach the top of a list like this?

duchess: I confess I’m surprised, the internet has a really crazy power, songs reappear all the time and others gain strength at unusual moments. But I’m happy to reach more people and see that my audience is growing and more women are listening.

AUR: If you could include “99 Problems” in the soundtrack of one movie or series, what would it be?

duchess: Insecure haha. Luanna loves this series and I think it makes a lot of sense.

As the star of Duquesa’s career continues to rise, her future in the music industry looks more promising than ever. The artist is part of Boogie Naipe, producer of rapper Mano Brown. As she continues to evolve and grow, Duq’s career journey will no doubt be a testament to the power, talent and determination of the Black woman.
