Released in our cinemas on April 5, The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan is one of the biggest successes of French cinema this year: at the time of writing, it is the third French film at the box office, after Asterix and Obelix. Middle Empire and Alibi.com 2.
Directed by Martin Bourboulon, the film received a total of 3.3 million participants. It is the 7th biggest blockbuster of 2023, ahead of Indiana Jones 5 and Guardians of the Galaxy 3. It could gain additional audiences in theaters when the sequel is released. Pathรฉ, in fact, plans to delay the first installment when the second is released.
Release Date: When Will The Three Musketeers Sequel Be Released?
A sequel to The Three Musketeers, titled The Three Musketeers: Milady, will be released on December 13, 2023, 7 months after D’Artagnan.
guest A question from our colleagues from Boxoffice ProArdavan Safai, president of Pathรฉ, also gave some clarifications on this strategy, which comes out between the two films.
“We asked ourselves how to sequence the films today so that the second one doesn’t get less reception. When we go to the cinema to see a movie, the basis of the public who will go to see the second movie is necessarily the one who saw the first movie and no one else. So, unlike Mesrine’s two parts, released one month apart (October and November 2008, Ed.)We decided to wait until 6 months after the release of The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan in cinemas, VOD and television, on pay-per-view.
and add:As a result, we will probably expand our viewer base and start promoting the second film, or even D’Artagnan in a few days. It is essential for us to have a second operational period of the first part before releasing the sequel.“

Has the sequel to The Three Musketeers already been filmed?
The sequel has already been filmed. It was filmed in continuity with the first one. “ It is a unique experience. We shot everything at once. It’s like a big 4 hour movie. It’s extraordinary. We were transported to the story, the characters, the issues. He is very rich, every day he builds this building little by little“, he explained Martin Bourboulon to our microphone.
He follows: “This is a project that was always designed in two parts. That’s really the starting point that we had with the producers and the writers, the community, for the show to match the adventure that we want to offer..
We would like to present this film in two parts. We also want the cinema to take back somewhere, why not, the appointment it has the right to make with the audience, as well as individual series. It was very certain in our minds.”
Last March, a few days before the film’s release, Martin Bourboulon told us that everyone was working on the finishing touches. “The sound, the visuals, the special effects aren’t finished. I wouldn’t be ready to release the film. It was played three months later, or a little later. We seemed to be offered a sequel in December. Which is what we wanted, and not too long. We might give you time to re-do the first one. This is a compromise that was made quite early on.”
What can we expect from this sequel?
Like an episode of the series, the ending of the first part ends on a cliffhanger, and like a superhero blockbuster, the film even offers a bonus scene during the credits! Remember to stay for the credits!
Warning The suite contains spoilers for the post-credits scene
Spoiler:
This scene shows a discussion between Milady and Richelieu. The latter asks the cardinal to get rid of the musketeers…
Based on the character played by Eva Green, the film will pick up where D’Artagnan left off and focus on Millade’s story: from her past to her future and her schemes with Cardinal de Richelieu (Eric Ruff).
While promoting the first installment, we asked Eva Green if she could give us any hints about the sequel. Here’s a little teaser he gave us to avoid spoilers as much as possible!
“This film is made in two parts, and really in the second part we explore more of my character, Milady, who is much more stubborn, much more of a warrior. There are real fight scenes. I have to practice a lot before that. There are absolutely amazing stuntmen. I love roles that are a bit physical and it helps me find the inner side of the character. These are quite difficult roles. Obviously, I am not used to fencing and Aikido. It was a real pleasure, a real luxury.“
In the second part, we really understand why Milady became Milady.
“My goal was to bring humanity to the characterhe continues. In the first part she remains quite mysterious and dangerous, but in the second part we really understand why Milady became Milady. Why did she become this ruthless woman? I really enjoyed this challenge.“
and to conclude:I shouldn’t reveal too much, I have to remain very mysterious about this second part. The writers decided to explore Achilles’ heel. I found it very interesting; That’s what I like about this character. There are cracks in the back.”
