Modern Playlist: Watch 50 clips featuring the best of current alternative rock

The Modern Playlist is a monthly selection of the most recent B-side releases on YouTube. There are 50 clips of alternative trends, with an emphasis on recent weeks news.

The current list only includes alternative rock bands, especially artists influenced by 90s trends such as shoegazer, dreampop, Britpop and grunge. But there’s also a healthy dose of sixties psychedelia and furry hard rock in the final stretch.

Starting with Speedy Ortiz, Bleach Lab, My Ugly Valentine and other groups with female singers, which explore an evolution of the shoegazer with influences from the dissonant American indie scene of 30 years ago, the shrieking rock of guitars soon lands in the neo-grunge, before take a turn to dreampop and immerse yourself in the Britpop revival currently underway in the UK, featuring more than a dozen bands, from established The Institutes to newcomers Rosellas.

It’s worth noting that the veteran Kula Shaker, from the original Britpop era, has ridden this wave of nostalgia for the sound of 19th century bands and returns with new music. In the list of resurrected, attention is also drawn to the return of Drop Nineteen, one of the bands of the small American shoegazer scene of the 90s.

As Britpop was already considered a revival of British music from the Beatles era, the selection takes advantage of the bridge to conclude with a lysergic journey through new psychedelic artists and hard rock bands, with clips inspired by the retro look of 50 years ago.

As always, the videos are organized by sound affinity in a playlist – to view them on Smart TVs, look for Transmit in the Settings tab of Chrome or More tools/Broadcast etc. in Edge -, with the aim of inserting a sequence that emphasizes the impression of video recording / mixtape.
