Yoga, female cycle and premenstrual syndrome

Asana and pranayma help a woman to understand her body better

Now considered undesirable by many modern women, the menstrual cycle was a sacred feminine moment in many ancient traditions. Yoga, by increasing a woman’s harmony with her body, can be an ally both in premenstrual syndrome and during the menstrual cycle, rebalancing emotions and relieving annoying cramps.

All the lines of Hatha Yoga have the same effect on the female organism: the woman begins to better understand her body, to feel it, has greater contact with the totality of the self, creates a greater connection with the Earth, awakens ancestral wisdom .

Asanas (physical postures) and some pranayamas (breathing exercises) stabilize emotions, tone the liver, balance the endocrine system and thus help regulate the menstrual cycle.

TPM extension

The regularity of the menstrual cycle and the premenstrual syndrome are closely linked to a woman’s level of stress. She sometimes becomes so emotionally unbalanced from the accumulation of activities that she carries out that it affects her cycle: there may be a delay, an early period or simply not coming.

Back bending, twisting and inversion asanas help calm the nervous system, revitalize the abdominal organs and endocrine system, and are recommended before menstruation.

During the menstrual period

The recommendations for women in their menstrual period, both already practicing and for those who want to start practicing are:

  1. Avoid intense practices. Don’t try to deepen or improve your asanas, avoid intense inversions and backbends.
  2. Relax completely in each asana. Leaving the abdomen free, direct the breath to the most uncomfortable regions, which are usually the abdomen, head and legs.
  3. For those who suffer a lot from cramps, seated asanas with forward bends (preferably with a support that presses on the abdomen) and child’s pose (balasana) are suitable. The supta badha konasana, with pillow and belt, also helps to improve the discomfort.

Yoga awakens body awareness, so learn to listen to what your body is saying. So, if you feel that your body is asking for relaxation during the menstrual cycle, rest.
