An aesthetically captivating and devastating work for fans of serial killer stories.
When Patrick Süskind published Perfume: The Story of a Murderer in 1985 it achieved astonishing success: Hardly any other German book has sold so well worldwide, hardly any other has remained on bestseller lists in Germany for so long. It was deemed impossible to film the book, and Süskind hesitated for a long time before selling the film rights.
He finally made it, and the adaptation went to German film greats Bernd Eichinger (The Fall) and Tom Tykwer (Run, Lola, Run). Tom has achieved the impossible 20 years after the novel’s publication: he has translated Süskind’s literary vision into film, and he has done it with brilliantly staged footage – which you can watch at Netflix.
WHAT IS STRETCH PERFUME?
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw) comes from a difficult background: Left for dead by his mother at the fish market, he survived and has been bringing bad luck to everyone he meets ever since. His specialty is his fine sense of smell, with which he can recognize smells from afar.
Obsessed with creating the perfect perfume, he completes an apprenticeship with perfumer Baldini (Dustin Hoffman). But it’s a very different perfume that Grenouille is looking for: nothing is sweeter than beautiful women.
