If you like the Saw movie series, you may have your own favorite or have already read or commented on which one is the best. There are ratings and ratings on this one, but what is the heaviest movie in the Saw series?
There is no denying the long trail of violence, blood and torture present in the 9 horror films of the series, over the course of 19 years. However, the theme is the backdrop for a complex plot, different loose or intertwined narratives, temporalities and assassins scattered throughout the scripts. From then on, the I ventured a guess as to which sequel movie is heavier. Let’s go to the analysis.
For context, here’s a quick summary of the franchise. The first Saw (Saw) is a 2004 American independent film. Written by James Wan and Leigh Whannel and also directed by James Wan. The protagonist is Jigsaw, a serial killer played by Tobin Bell. Jigsaw kidnaps people and puts them in death traps, saying they’ll get another chance at rehab, in exchange for sacrificing their way out. One of the survivors, Amanda Young (Shawnee Smith), is also a key player in the franchise.
Under the direction of Kevin Greutert, we can consider the sixth feature film, Saw 6 (Saw VI), from 2009, the heaviest film of the entire franchise. Yes, it’s intense in terms of gore, with extreme violence and fast pace. Without worrying about the exaggeration and lack of verisimilitude of a good detective plot, the director compensates with the creativity of the traps, the excellent editing and the moral dilemmas that emerge. But that’s all. We will not go into the merits of positive or negative reviews.
Stage Blood Gallons in Saw 6
The thing is, once we hit the sixth Saw movie, the suspense was left behind for a long time. Jigsaw and Amanda also keep coming back in endless flashbacks to try and keep the story going, and the killer of the moment, Hoffman (Costas Mandylor), keeps killing for the sake of killing.
The detective is the one who takes the place of Jigsaw to justify his legacy and his true plan. He draws the attention of the police and is discovered again after starting a new game with William Easton (Peter Outerbridge), a corrupt health plan businessman who lets his clients die in order for the company to make more money, without medical expenses for treatments. Perhaps an attempt at a critique of the US health care system, but drowned out by Hoffman’s motivation to kill for the sake of killing.
Maybe that’s why, from that film on, Saw dedicated himself once and for all to the genre of “torture porn”. If you used to see severed limbs bouncing around the screen, now you’ll even see their innards drip onto the floor.
If he survives and has courage, he will make it to the ninth film and will be able to face Saw X (2023), the longest of the entire franchise, with a premiere scheduled for September.
