Netflix has released the posters and trailer for “Mafia da Dor,” a dark comedy-drama starring Emily Blunt (“Jungle Cruise”) and Chris Evans (“Avengers: Endgame”). Directed by David Yates (“Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secret”), the film is described as similar in tone to “The Big Short”, “American Hustle” and “The Wolf of Wall Street”.
Emily Blunt plays Liza Drake, a working-class single mother who has just lost her job and finds herself with no options. A chance encounter with pharmaceutical sales rep Pete Brenner, played by Chris Evans, sets Liza on a financially but ethically questionable upward trajectory. Liza becomes embroiled in a dangerous extortion scheme while dealing with her increasingly unstable boss, played by Andy Garcia, her daughter’s (Chloe Coleman) worsening medical condition, and a growing awareness of the toll company is provoking about women’s health.
The trailer alludes to Liza and Pete’s lavish partying lifestyles, warning that “‘Pain Mafia’ can cause energy surge, mood lift, euphoria, paranoia, aggression.” [e] greed”.
Netflix investment
The streaming giant bought the film’s global rights for $50 million during its market presentation at the Cannes Film Festival. Written by Wells Tower and directed by David Yates, ‘Mafia da Dor’ is part of a series of releases planned by Netflix for the fall season, which include ‘The Killer’, directed by David Fincher and starring Michael Fassbender, and ‘The The The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar” by Wes Anderson.
The world premiere will take place next Monday (9/11) at the Toronto Film Festival, with the launch on October 27 on Netflix.
