Mexico’s ruling party on Wednesday nominated former Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum as its candidate in next year’s presidential election, potentially making her the first woman to hold the office in the country. Sheinbaum, 61, is an ally of the current president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and was already considered the favorite in the Morena (National Regeneration Movement) primaries. “Today the Mexican people have decided,” a smiling Sheinbaum told her supporters, who returned shouting “president, president, president,” at a news conference where Morena was declared the candidate. “We will win in 2024,” she said. The politician defeated five internal competitors and won all five national primaries held to decide who would run. According to the party, he received an average of 39% of the vote.
However, hours after the announcement, his closest rival and former chancellor, Marcelo Ebrard, said the vote had irregularities and needed to be redone. Ebrard said he and his team were removed from the event where Sheinbaum was declared the winner. He stated that he does not rule out running for the centre-left Citizens’ Movement, the only opposition party that has not yet decided who its candidate will be. According to Morena, Ebrard received just over 25% of the vote in the primary. Despite the candidate’s complaints, party leaders defended the vote. “There were no incidents that definitively affected the final result,” said Alfonso Durazo, president of Morena’s national executive. “The outcome of this trial is final.” All governors of Morena State, including Durazo, signed a statement confirming the integrity of the candidate selection process. Opinion polls have shown Morena is the favorite to win the June 2 election, and López Obrador has called for the party to remain united next year. Sheinbaum did the same in his victory speech: “We need everyone. Unity is key. The doors are always open and will never close.” The main opposition coalition also chose a woman, the charismatic senator Xóchitl Gálvez, of indigenous origins who became a successful entrepreneur.
Sheinbaum, a well-known physicist and environmentalist before her entry into politics, has promised to consolidate the legacy of the current president, who has an approval rating of around 60%.
