The inmates will help clean up flood-hit cities

Starting this Friday, the work will be strengthened by prisoners from Montenegro, Bento Gonçalves, Guaporé and Charqueadas.

Around 30 inmates have been mobilized to carry out clean-up work and help receive donations in Rio Grande do Sul municipalities affected by the floods. This action is the result of a partnership between the Superintendency of Penitentiary Services (Susepe) and the Secretariat of Penal and Socio-Educational Systems (SSPS). Prison labor is made available in the cities of Arroio do Meio, Santa Cruz do Sul, Venâncio Aires, Lajeado and Encantado, where inmates are also in charge of distributing donated food.

In addition to cleaning activities and distribution of donations, the initiative involves the production of 2,000 bars of soap, made by inmates of the Santo Ângelo Penal Institute, to be distributed in the affected areas. Previously, governor Eduardo Leite had mentioned the possibility of using prison labor to contribute to the recovery of Muçum, one of the municipalities most affected by the storm, in the Taquari Valley.

The meeting held on Thursday evening sought to take stock of the activities and analyze alternatives to further expand the availability of prison labor in the affected municipalities. Starting this Friday, the work will be strengthened by prisoners from Montenegro, Bento Gonçalves, Guaporé and Charqueadas.
