The classic 90s game “Duke Nukem” will finally become a movie. Producers are Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the trio behind the success of “Cobra Kai”
The studio responsible is Legendary, who has a tradition in big productions like “Dune” and “Godzilla vs. Kong”.
Released in 1991 by Apogee Software (now 3D Realms), “Duke Nukem” started out as a PC game, but it was its third game, made in the PlayStation era, that made history. “Duke Nukem 3D” was the first first person shooter to put the player in the place of the central character, back in 1997, influencing all the development of the games that followed.
After disappearing for several years, the franchise only returned to business in 2011 with “Duke Nukem Forever”, which remains its latest release.
The games follow the title hero, inspired by 1980s action movie heroes (including their catchphrases), battling an alien invasion of Los Angeles. In each level, he battles aliens through strip clubs and movie sets, overcomes moonbases and spaceships, meets mutant cops and rescues women used as alien incubators, until he gets to the big villain, the Cycloid Emperor.
The production does not yet have a defined director, but it is not excluded that one of the three producers will take over the direction. Hurwitz and Schlossberg have already successfully directed the comedies “Fresh Dawn 2” (2008) and “American Pie” (2012). And all three have directed episodes of “Cobra Kai”.
The film does not have a date to be released in theaters.
