Anatomy of the Fall: ‘The Movie That Won’t Make It’ at the Palme d’Or… Why the Director Was Surprised by This Success

Palm and then? How do you feel about receiving the Palme d’Or? Justin Triet won the prestigious award last May, one of the most sought after in the film world, and his film, Anatomy of the Fall, is now in theaters.

Is it overwhelming to receive such an award? Following the comments of Julia Ducournau, winner of the Palme d’Or for Titane and the first French director to receive it 2 years ago, we asked Justin Trier how he received this award.

For reference, Julia Ducournau explained: “ Soderbergh, who won it at the age of 25 for his first film, had something brilliant to say when accepting the prize: “Well, I can only do less now!“The rest of Julia Ducournau’s statement here.

Is Justin Triet on this line? “The good thing is that I’m not too small either. (ed. 45 years old), Compared to Soderbergh, who was 25 years old. The story is big: he’s heartbroken; He wrote the film in 15 days and won the Palme d’Or. The story there is overwhelming.

I’m fine, I had time to live a little! But obviously very happy. This is the greatest honor a person can have. I am very excited about my cast too. It’s something to share that’s crazy..”

I haven’t won a prize since my first short film!

And to continue: “I haven’t won a prize since my first short film. 10 years was nothing. And then, it’s nice to get this 2nd Palme d’Or from Julia, who wasn’t the only one on the jury. .

I will try to have a little normal life. I don’t feel frozen there. I’m going to travel a bit more this year, but then I’ll continue my life as a filmmaker: making movies.”

Justin Triet began accompanying the film in North America, in this case at the prestigious TIFF, Toronto Film Festival in Canada. Anatomy of a Fall will soon be released in the US, first at the Aspen and New York Film Festivals, and then in limited release on October 13, 2023, distributed by Neon.

He continues: “I don’t feel oppressed. I feel quite carried away. We have been working on this film for 3 and a half years. And then I remember that I started this film by saying: I’m making my most radical film, no one will go and see it, but it doesn’t matter. And then I thought to make a series! So basically I started with the idea that I was going to make a film that would have no notes! It’s going pretty well so far, so that’s great! “

Anatomy of the Fall achieved its best Palme d’Or start since Parasite in 2019. To date, the Justin Triet-directed film has surpassed 600,000 admissions in France.

It will establish itself as the most watched film by the director, who has already enjoyed great success with Victoria, Virgin Efira and Vincent Lacoste. Anatomy of the Fall should exceed a million entries, thanks to a particularly good word. The film was well received by the audience of the AlloCiné Club, who gave them a label.
