Venice 2023: Golden Lion for Poor Creatures with Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo

2023 marked the 80th anniversary of the Venice Film Festival, the prestigious Italian film festival. The 2023 edition, led by director Damien Chazelle (La La Land, Babylon), president of the official competition jury, announced its verdict.

The Golden Lion, Mostra’s highest award, was presented to Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos. The film is based on Laura Poitras’ All Beauty and Spilled Blood, which won awards last year. The American film director was also part of the jury this year.

The grand prize of the jury was awarded to the feature film “No Evil” by director Ryusuke Hamaguchi. Saint Omer, directed by Alice Diop, received this coveted prize in 2022. On the acting side, Kylie Spaney won the Volpe Award for Best Actress for her role in Priscilla. As for Peter Sarsgaard, he was honored for his performance in Memory.

The Silver Lion for Best Production was awarded to Matteo Garrone’s My Captain. The artist replaces Luca Guadagnino, who won last year’s Bones and All alongside Timothée Chalamet.

We remind you that the 80th edition of the festival was marked by controversy after the selection of feature films by Roman Polanski, Luc Besson and Woody Allen, who participated in cases of sexual violence.

The festival also celebrated the lifetime achievement of director Liliana Kavanagh and actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai with Golden Lion awards. The latter shed tears while receiving the prize. A very powerful moment of the 80th Venice Film Festival.
