Zack Snyder’s epic film is based on a real battle and has inspired other comic book film adaptations

After the remake of Dawn of the Dead (2004), Zack Snyder became a famous (and controversial) Hollywood director with the action film 300. The adaptation of Frank Miller’s novel set new standards, together with Sin City of Sin, by Robert Rodriguez, in terms of accurately bringing comic book imagery to the big screen.



The mix of historical references, blistering action and fantasy elements is a perfect combination in this film. Additionally, 300 also heavily influenced comic book adaptations.

In Frank Miller’s adaptation the director relied on a special style with which he transferred the individual panels of the comic to the 1:1 model. Along with overly stylized action consisting of lots of slow motion and heavily saturated tones, 300 often feels like a moving painting full of martial battles. The director used this style again in his next comic adaptation, Watchmen.




In terms of content, the story of 300 is based on a real battle called the Battle of Thermopylae.
