Italian PM says G20 in India ‘wasn’t easy’

Meloni, however, underlined that the edition ‘was a success’

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Sunday (10) that the G20 leaders’ summit in India “was a success”, but stressed that “it was not an easy edition”.

“I want to reiterate my congratulations to Prime Minister Modi for the success of this difficult edition. Italy has offered collaboration to the Indian presidency from the beginning, above all because we remain convinced that the G20 is a multilateral strategy as it allows dialogue with the Emerging countries and those from the South of the world”, said Meloni in his speech at the end of the New Delhi summit.

Regarding the final statement of the G20 leaders’ meeting, the head of the Italian government commented that everyone worked for a text that “made a specific reference to Ukraine”, but regretted that “it was not an obvious result, considering that all ministerial meetings ended without a final statement.”

“It is a declaration of commitment, but I still consider it important in this context. Complex and adjustment work was done, but in the end Russia also joined, perhaps so as not to remain isolated”, he added.

The final declaration of the summit, released yesterday (9), condemns “the use of force” and “territorial conquests” against the “sovereignty of any country”, but does not directly accuse Moscow, which is part of the group, for the invasion of Ukraine.

The text was a commitment to prevent the New Delhi meeting from concluding without a joint statement from the leaders, which had already occurred in ministerial-level meetings throughout the year. .
