Buichi Terasawa, the manga author made famous by the character Cobra, died this Friday, September 8, at the age of 68, of a myocardial infarction.
Born in Japan in 1955, Buichi Terasawa originally intended to pursue a career in medicine, but failed the exam. Despite his passion for film, he joined the world of manga in the early 1970s, saw many works and became especially famous as an assistant to Osamu Tezuka (known for creating Astro Boy and Leo King).
Starting in 1977, Terasawa began publishing his own manga and created the character that would bring him worldwide fame: a space adventurer named Cobra, equipped with a left arm cannon, travels the galaxy in search of treasure, constantly pursued by the galactic police.
Divided into 20 volumes and crowned with success, the manga went through several adaptations, including an animated film and an animated series in the early 1980s, and a live-action feature film was tentatively considered by a filmmaker. Frenchman Alexandre Aja in 2014.
It is an interesting fact that the special look of the Cobra is inspired by the features of Jean-Paul Belmondo, of whom Buichi Terasawa was a big fan.
Apart from his space adventurer, the mangaka has also signed other manga series, e.g Black Knight BAT or Kabuto.
Suffering from a brain tumor since 1998, Buichi Terasawa died on September 8, 2023 of a myocardial infarction at the age of 68.
