Legacy and controversies

The victories were not without controversy.

… Gone With the Wind collected Oscars that year (it won eight), but the film’s legacy was marred by its racist portrayal of African-American characters and its mistreatment of actress Hattie McDaniel. She also won the award for best supporting actress for her role, but at the awards ceremony she sat at a separate table, due to racial segregation at the time.

Already Rebecca established David O. Selznick as a producer of great literary adaptations. Some of his works are A star was born (1937), Anna Karenina (1935) e A tale of two cities (1935).

Two Oscars in a row

Consecutive Oscar wins are rare and have only occurred three times in the award’s history, with O. Selznick being the only one to date to have won two Best Picture trophies in consecutive years.

Tom Hanks and Spencer Tracy achieved the feat in the Best Actor category. Hanks won in 1994 and 1995, for Philadelphia AND Forrest Gumprespectively.

Tracy won in 1938, however Brave captainand 1939’s The city of boys.
